Breakaway Roper Shania Johnston Makes History with Record-Breaking 1.29-Second Run as The American Rodeo Central Regionals Get Underway in Oklahoma City

Breakaway and Tie-Down Roping leaderboards set, watch live on Cowboy+ Tonight as remaining field of athletes advance for Saturday’s Finals on FS1

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – As the chase for the  $2 million on the line at The American Rodeo Championship continues, an action-packed day of breakaway and tie-down roping inside of Oklahoma City’s OG&E Coliseum, led to a whirlwind of fast-paced, record-shattering times as 29 athletes move forward to Saturday’s final round. 

With an unprecedented 31 breakaway runs under the two second mark on Thursday afternoon, Shania Johnston (Union City, South Dakota) pushed the limits, defying previous records across all 13 years of The American Rodeo with an extraordinary 1.29-second run time in the Redemption Round. Crediting her equine partner for a successful day, Johnston now advances to Saturday’s Finals.

The American Rodeo Central Regionals at OG&E Coliseum features eight rodeo disciplines with up to 125 top athletes -including world-renowned pros, everyday cowboys/cowgirls and even local competitors putting it all on the line.

Each season 27 athletes leave three Regionals held in the East, Central and West regions with $10,000 each before they get to Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas for The American Rodeo Championship Weekend- where they have a chance to win a life-changing $2 million bonus.
